The Cult
Information Service, Inc., is made up primarily of volunteers. It is
important to note that the Cult Information Service limits its concerns about
destructive groups to unethical and illegal practices such as coercive
persuasion. The Cult Information Service does not pass judgment upon
doctrines or beliefs.
Who are these
destructive groups? It could be almost any kind of organization whose followers have
been deceptively and unethically recruited. They use thought reform or mind
control. These manipulative techniques are imposed without the informed
consent of the recruit and are designed to alter personality and behavior.
Illegal or
unethical practices. Destructive groups have engaged in child abuse, illegal
immigration, drug dealing, fraud and deceit in their recruiting and fund
raising activities. They harass critics, families and former followers with
threats, lawsuits and foul play. Some groups are guilty of stockpiling or
smuggling weapons and ammunition, sexual abuse, prostitution, kidnapping,
murder and attempted murder.
Who are we? We are former
destructive cult members and the families and friends of past and present
cult members. Some of us are mental health professionals, lawyers, physicians,
legislators, clergy, law enforcement officers and educators. We are concerned
about an estimated five million people who have been seriously affected by
more than 2,500 destructive cults.
What do we
do? We
are dedicated to bringing to public awareness the harmful effects of
destructive cults. We provide information and support for families, as well
as assistance to former cult members. We recognize the need for voluntary
exit counseling as a means to restore critical thinking. We support all legal
efforts to protect individuals' freedom of choice.
What else do
we do? We
provide information to journalists, students and researchers. We prepare and
sponsor programs, find speakers, work with colleges, schools, churches and
synagogues. We alert officials to potentially dangerous cult-related issues.
We answer phone calls for help and information every day.
How do we
help victims? The Cult Information Service, Inc. offers networks for ex-cult
members to share their experiences and help each other heal. We provide
special seminars and programs for ex-cult members with the participation of
mental health professionals and clergy.
